Did You Know . . .

1 cup of 1 % Milk has 15 grams of sugar.

1 cup of Raisin Bran cereal has 17 grams of sugar.

Your daily intake of sugar should be about 40 grams.

Breakfast alone can be 80% (32g of 40g) of your daily sugar intake.

Pretty sure I eat a lot more than 40 grams of sugar in a day . . .

(I googled daily sugar intake and 40 g was the most popular answer. Anyone know for sure if this is correct?)

What KIND of sugar? I don’t think they’re talking about naturally occurring sugars found in things like fruit, but rather 40g of added sugar (like a can of soda that has about 32g of sugar).

yes, 40g of ADDED sugar.

So my question is . . . is the sugar in milk naturally occuring? Because it has lactose (-ose=sugar). Do they add sugar into milk?

no sugar is added to milk. during the process, the milk is separated (getting harmful bacteria and sediments out and also separating the fatty stuff to make cream from the milky stuff for the stuff we drink), fortified (add vitamins A and D), pasteurized (heated), and homogenized (get the rest of the fat out so it doesn’t collect on the top of the milk and so it’s evenly distributed throughout the milk).

40g sugar = 1.5oz = a little more than 1/6th of a cup, or 1/2 of a 1/3 of a cup. Another reason to cook our own food, since sugar is added to pretty much all prepared food in one form or another.
