I have grown sick of buying cheap USB adapters for my car that are a less than ideal solution for a lack of in-vehicle portable electronics power sources. For my weekend project, I purchased a micro DC 12v USB adapter, dismantled it, tapped into my car’s 12v and ground lines running to the DC outlet, and then installed a panel mount female USB adapter into my car’s console. Behold, car-based USB power without a junky adapter rolling around in the car (I realize that there are some nicks here and there in the shots, but I have since cleaned them up):
