This is why I have made a choice not to support watching media that seeks to redefine the family:
`Glee,’ `Modern Family’ among GLAAD award winners
Our faith has proclaimed the sacredness of a family that is composed of a father, mother and children. We are also taught that our individual gender is a part of our eternal identity. Yet when we choose to view shows that seek to redefine the family and bolster support for those who choose to live alternative lifestyles, we are proclaiming our willingness to accept the world’s definition of family in exchange for a few cheap laughs.
What do we tell our children when they ask why we are taught that such lifestyles are against the commandments of God, yet we allow them to permeate the walls of our own homes as “the norm?” Frankly, the world can celebrate it’s “diversity” to no end; I for one, would much prefer the eternal praise of God at judgment day, as opposed to the fleeting praise of man for being accepting of any and everything associated with the world’s dictum.

So many sitcoms have been displaying dysfunctional families for so many years. I particularly get tired of the ones that portray the father as a bumbling idiot incapable of impulse control. We could stand to have more heroes, and it would be a novelty to have an actual functional family portrayed on the screen that people could aspire to. Plenty of comedy there, and tough lessons, too.
for the record: casey and i don’t record or watch Glee or Modern Family (and Big Bang Theory, which has it’s own issues) anymore. unfortunately, it took some uncomfortable episodes for us to stop recording them, but we have stopped and our future kids won’t be affected. (*whew*)
we like Castle, No Ordinary Family, Spring Wipeout occasionally, and Lie to Me (in case anyone is looking for new shows to watch…)
Jess, this post wasn’t directed at you by any means. Just sharing my thoughts in general about it. That being said, I’m glad that you don’t watch them anymore :).
I agree. We had to stop watching The Office & Modern Family for the very reasons above. Right now, the shows I faithfully watch are: American Idol, Survivor, & Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. They’re all pretty good shows (except for sensual J-Lo performances on AI, which I hastily fast-forwarded through)
Sorry, I know this post was a long time ago but I thought you guys just weren’t blogging. Apparently I needed to resubscribe when you guys changed the look! Which is pretty, btw.
Yeah, somehow our RSS feed got messed up. Thanks for resubscribing!
I didn’t resubscribe because I don’t know how (on this blog)! Where’s the button??
